2010 Chile earthquake The 2010 Chile earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), rating a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasting for about three minutes. The cities experiencing the strongest shakingâVIII (Destructive) on the Mercalli intensity scaleâwere Talcahuano, Arauco, Lota, Chiguayante, CaĂąete, and San Antonio. The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VII (Very Strong).Tremors were felt in many Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, CĂłrdoba, Mendoza and La Rioja. San Francisco: arguably the most beautiful, certainly the most liberal city in the US, it remains true to itself: a funky, individualistic, surprisingly small city whose people pride themselves on being the cultured counterparts to their cousins in LA the last bastion of civilization on the lunatic fringe of America. It's a compact and approachable place, where downtown streets rise on impossible gradients to reveal stunning views of the city, the bay and beyond, and blanket fogs roll in unexpectedly to envelop the city in mist. This is not the California of mono-tonous blue skies and slothful warmth the temperatures rarely exceed the seventies, and even during summer can drop much lower.The original inhabitants of this area, the Ohlone Indians, were all but wiped out within a few years of the establishment in 1776 of the Mission Dolores, the sixth in the chain of Spanish Catholic missions that ran the length of California. Two years after the Americans replaced the Mexicans in 1846, the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills precipitated the rip-roaring Gold Rush. Within a year fifty thousand pioneers had traveled west, and east from China, turning San Francisco from a muddy village and wasteland of sand dunes into a thriving supply center and transit town. By the time the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, San Francisco was a lawless, rowdy boomtown of bordellos and drinking dens, something the moneyed elite who hit it big on the much more dependable silver Comstock Load worked hard to mend, constructing wide boulevards, parks, a cable car system and elaborate Victorian redwood mansions.In the midst of the city's golden age, however, a massive earthquake, followed by three days of fire, wiped out most of the town in 1906. Rebuilding began immediately, resulting in a city more magnificent than before; in the decades that followed, writers like Dashiell Hammett and Jack London lived and worked here. Many of the city's landmarks, including Coit Tower and both the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, were built in the 1920s and 1930s. By World War II San Francisco had been eclipsed by Los Angeles as the main west coast city, but it achieved a new cultural eminence with the emergence of the Beats in the Fifties and the hippies in the Sixties, when the fusion of music, protest, rebellion and, of course, drugs that characterized 1967's "Summer of Love" took over the Haight-Ashbury district.In a conservative America, San Francisco's reputation as a liberal oasis continues to grow, attracting waves of resettlers from all over the US. It is estimated that over half the city's population originates from somewhere else. It is a city in a constant state of evolution, fast gentrifying itself into one of the most high-end towns on earth thanks, in part, to the disposable incomes pumped into its coffers from its sizeable singles and gay contingents. Gay capital of the world, San Francisco has also been the scene of the dot.com revolution's rise and fall. The resultant wealth at one time made housing prices skyrocket often at the expense of the city's middle and lower classes but the closure of hundreds of start-up IT companies has brought real-estate prices back down to (almost) reasonable levels. Despite the city's current economic ebbs and flows, your impression of the city likely won't be altered it remains one of the most proudly distinct places to be found anywhere.

UFO-like lights over Norway 'not linked' to failed Russian missile

Russia's Defence Ministry says the latest test of its new Bulava intercontinental missile in the White Sea has failed. The announcement comes after Norwegian authorities reported strange spiral lights seen in the arctic sky which sparked a wave of UFO frenzy. But the Russian Defence Ministry have not linked the two incidents.

SALT LAKE CITY -- A fast-moving meteor lit up the night skies over most of Utah just after midnight Wednesday. Moments later, the phones lit up at KSL as people across the state called to tell us what they saw and ask what it was. Scientists are calling it a "remarkable midnight fireball." The source of all the excitement was basically a rock, falling from space. In addition to KSL, witnesses to the meteor quickly began call 911. "I'm currently driving, but I just saw a giant blue flash in the sky, and it came down into the city," a caller from Ogden said. A caller in Bountiful told dispatchers, "It flashed from the west, and it lit up the whole freakin' neighborhood." A Salt Lake City caller said, "Ma'am, I'm not kidding you. I am terrified." Professor David Kieda is chair of the University of Utah's astronomy department. He said the energy of the meteor coming into Earth's atmosphere was so powerful it has to be measured in Terawatts. "It's almost like the consumption of the United States all at once. It was a fraction of a second," Kieda said. When a meteor enters the atmosphere, it gives off a lot of heat and light. Folks at the Clark Planetarium say this rock was big--between the size of a microwave and washer-dryer unit. "I mean this thing lit up the sky, literally. It was like daylight." - Patrick Wiggins, NASA Solar Ambassador At exactly 12:07, people from all over the western United States watched as the bolide meteor crashed into Earth's atmosphere. In some areas, the flash of light was so bright it caused light-sensor street lamps to shut off. Clark Planetarium Director Seth Jarvis said the stony meteorite was probably traveling 80,000 miles an hour when it hit our atmosphere. He said it happened 100 miles up in the air; so despite the brightness, Utah was never in any danger. "These collisions can do damage, but they are extremely rare; and literally once in a century do you observe something that's actually doing damage," he said. Witness Andy Bailey said, "Oh, it lit up the whole sky, like almost brighter than the day. It was bright." Don White was in Wyoming and told KSL Newsradio for a moment he suspected a nuclear strike. "With something that brilliant and that fast, it was like, whoa, did we just get hit or something? It would have been some bigger noise I guess if a nuclear device had gone off," he said.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its six-member crew began an 11-day delivery flight to the International Space Station on Monday with a 2:28 p.m. EST launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will transport spare hardware to the outpost and return a station crew member who spent more than two months in space. Atlantis is carrying about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain a proper orientation in space. The large equipment can best be transported using the shuttle's unique capabilities.

The video is said to drag or wind down, decelerating, declining in pitch, in a completely draining and depressing style with limited action. Almost like our credit / debt based economy at the hands of our present administration. Dear President Obama, We need jobs and industry not debt and more debt from credit. Gas is soon going to be $4.00 a gallon again and cereal is going to be $5 per box. How is any of this change? Soon things will be worse than they ever were, how can you deny this or not notice? 3.5% "growth" in oil company proffits is not what this country needs. And, frankly, how to drop it like a girl.This is in the "how to and style" category, because not only do I demonstrate how-- I do it with style.I have over 11,000 miles on 2 wheels, and this is my most serious incident yet. I ride safe and do my best to keep it shiny side up. But, mistakes happen. Hopefully, I am the sort who learns from them.The best I can figure, my rear tire went nut-zo on the rocks, and I in turn when a little nut-zo on the front brake. I think. I don't remember grabbing it, but it wouldn't have taken much, with my back tire already losing traction and the front tire already turned slightly... Glancing down as it happened certainly didn't help. Target fixation FTW! It's everything I know not to do, and everything I practice and drill not to do... *sigh*Any questions?
